Game Reserves

The game reserves of KwaZulu Natal are tremendously varied and tremendously exciting. Although comparatively close to each other, all these game reserves seem to ‘specialise’ in different species of animals and produce different experiences for visitors.

At the luxurious lodge of Mkuze Falls the private terraces and plunge pools of some bedrooms overlook the river and the falls. From there you will see huge crocodiles sleeping on the river banks; and on game drives in the forest you may encounter rhino, herds of elephant, a pride of lion, and, if you’re lucky, a solitary leopard.

At Falaza you will sleep in glamorous, comfortable ‘East African’ style tents on raised wooden platforms. And you’ll meet semi-resident white rhinos by the lodge swimming pool. Perhaps because Falaza has no big cats the white rhino seem very relaxed and are also curiously unafraid of vehicles. As a result, mother rhinos with tiny babies will often allow you to approach extremely close.

Amakhosi Hotel

At AmaKhosi you will eat in the beautiful main lodge and sleep in your own dramatically designed private house overlooking the river. These houses are widely spaced from one another and are built following the curve of the river. From your verandah you may look down on elephant, lion and antelope coming to drink each evening and on game drives you may see a pride of lion and have close encounters with enormous bull elephants.

At Phinda you will find a fascinating variety of eco-systems - from an ancient sand forest, to the mountains, to a beach on the Indian Ocean. There is also a large choice of accommodation from a tented camp to a luxurious mountain lodge; from a camp with a stylish main lodge and glamorous private houses in the sand forest to a smaller but super luxurious camp catering exclusively for private parties. And on game drives and walking safaris you can see large prides of lion, herds of elephant, white and black rhino and you can track the beautiful cheetah for which this reserve is famous.

The pool at Makatana

Makakatana Bay Lodge is the only private lodge in the Greater St Lucia Wetland Park, a World Heritage Site. The main lodge is connected to a number of charming houses reached by walkways in the forest. Take a boat trip to see hippo and crocodiles in the lake; or, because there are no big cats, view game from horseback in the Wetlands. The 5 ecological zones of the Wetlands Park range from the warm Indian Ocean with coral reefs teeming with fish, whales and dolphins to Lake St. Lucia - Africa’s largest natural estuary with its huge population of water birds. The Park also contains some of the highest vegetated sand dunes in the world.

At all these reserves the morning and evening game drives are absolutely fascinating and a must-do. They are timed for early in the morning and in the late afternoon into evening when there is a good chance of seeing the big cats as well as the rest of the Big Five. These game drives are almost always included in the daily price of each camp.
